How does video impact your SEO?

In a society looking for instant answers, video is growing to become an essential component in our modern, busy, online lives. Marketing strategies in most businesses will now incorporate some form of video content. The reason for this is that video content is easy to digest quickly, while providing relevant information which is great value for money.

How does Google rank videos?

With the change in trends towards more video content, Google developed a search algorithm called Hummingbird. The name stands for precise and fast. This algorithm deals more with what the requester intended in the question asked, than just focusing on keyword results.
In days gone by if you typed in: “How to unblock a blocked drain”, you might get information back on where to purchase Drano, but the current Google algorithms are more likely to return a video showing you how to unblock the drain.
Imagine that you are a plumber, and you have a piece of equipment which unblocks drains. If you include some footage on your website of the unit in action and call it “How to unblock a blocked drain”, you will rate extremely well on Google. The Google algorithm will effectively rank videos as one of the best solutions to the question asked. It is looking at the intent and context of the question as if it were being spoken as part of a conversation and supplying the answers accordingly.

How do I select content for my Videos?

When creating a video, you need to think about what questions the video answers. This is how Google will be looking at your video and subsequently showing it in SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).
If the videos you make answer relevant questions about specific topics, then there is a high likelihood that they will show up as part of the search results. This is one of the reasons why videos are becoming so popular.
A video, well named with relevant content, will therefore give you more chance to entice potential customers to your website than any other media.
