The Power of the Podcast

We're On Air!

This month, Jezweb CEO Jeremy Dawes featured on business and lifestyle podcast “Every Business Needs a Hero” hosted by David Ross. The theme of the podcast was “Work/Life balance and how to achieve it, with Jeremy drawing from his personal experience in building the Jezweb business. In the podcast, David posed that there was no such thing as "Work/Life Balance" in the way we normally imagine and advised to instead consider ones working and personal lifes as more of a Ying Yang example. Instead of two seperate areas, David suggests they be considered as interrelating fields; each fuelling the other. For example, we cannot live without work but without personal satisfaction in life, work is also meaningless. In the podcasts "Hero" segment,  David and Jeremy honed in on the beginnings of Jezweb and Jeremy’s goals and ambitions in starting in business in the 90’,s, in particular Jeremy's initial goal of good work/life balance. Topics covered also included sustainable business growth, general business tips and actions to avoid and charming anecdotes from a time when the internet was in its infancy.

What Could a Podcast Do for Your Company?

In a world full of competing voices and marketing chatter it can be difficult to get your business message across to your audience. So often, content goes unseen and campaigns unheard, which can leave many business owners amiss as to how to reach their customers. Well, the good news is that there are a myriad of marketing tools available to businesses and companies that can assist in engaging their audience and one of these tools is podcasting!

Podcasting involves one or more individuals recording digital audio files of conversations, discussions or debates, editing these files and uploading them to the internet for people to subscribe to or stream on platforms such as Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Podcasts have grown massively in popularity amongst audiences using mobile devices who will often listen whilst driving in their car, cleaning their house or other such activities that they would not be able to do if they were consuming written content. Podcasts can be used to build your brand, create trust between you and your customers or improve conversion rates. Whatever your business, podcasting could be the newest addition to your marketing toolbox.

Here’s 5 reasons why you should consider starting a podcast for your business:

  1. Podcasts are a great alternative to regular video content. - Podcasts are an excellent way to create engaging content for your customers, without all the variables that come with videography. If you want to shoot a video for your website, you’ll have to consider camera quality, sound, makeup and hair, not to mention what the weather might do halfway through filming. In comparison, podcasting is a fairly simple alternative. The list of equipment is small, (all you need is a good quality microphone, editing software for your computer and a stable internet connection) and easily bought from your nearest electronics shop. Once acquired, you can record engaging content for your podcast rain, hail or shine.

  1. People love People - Customers are much more likely to purchase from a friend than a stranger. That’s why it is so important to include the human element in the marketing strategy for your business. Podcasting is a great way to do this. Although the communication is only one sided your audience will begin to connect with you. This in turn builds trust which will result in better conversion rates and increased sales as your brand voice strengthens amongst your customers. Podcasts are also effective in reaching new prospects for your business as new listeners tune in to what you have to say.

  1. You Can Make it Yours - One of the best things about starting a podcast for your business is that you decide what the content will be about. Podcasts are a great platform for discussion, review and debate and topics vary from educational, to entertaining to informative. You could cycle through these types of content as you please, or combine them to engage and provide value to your listeners. A solar power installation company  firm for example might have a podcast centred on the topic of green energy and sustainable living. A business coach might develop a podcast on areas of wellbeing and self-help. The opportunities truly are endless and you can design a podcast that truly fits your business.

  2. It’s Good Practice - one of the most common phrases heard in the workplace is “I don’t like public speaking. Fair enough, it can be daunting to stand in front of any audience and speak with authority. However one of the benefits of podcasting is that it helps you develop those skills and the confidence to speak in public. This will become very helpful when you are creating video content, conducting meetings or even answering the phone.

  3. It’s Another Touchpoint - In business, you want your name in front of as many people as possible. This is why we pay for advertisements and create corporate social media accounts. The idea is that if we connect with our customers and prospects enough and in the right way, they will make a purchase or book a service; whatever it may be. These connections we put out into the world are called touchpoints. So, for example, a company social media post is a touch point for the company that posted it, a label on a water bottle is a touchpoint point for the company that made it. Some real world examples of touch points include the Coles branded shopping band, the Adidas branded shoe box or the Nike branded shirt. These are things that we look at and are reminded of the brand they represent. So in this way, your podcast becomes another touchpoint for your business in the podcast streaming space.
