AU Domain Auction

The biggest release of .au direct domains ever is going to happen on the 3rd of October.

Do you want a custom something.au domain?

This is a big deal and a really remarkable opportunity

Hopefully by now you are aware of the new .au direct domain names and have a bit of an understanding that it can be a good idea for a business to apply for your businessname.au. Thousands of these new .au domains have been registered like we registered jezweb.au.

For many businesses there is not a compelling reason to register a new .au direct domain and they will happily continue using the .com.au, .net.au etc.

However there could be a variation of a businss name, a shorter name, persons name or product name that would be great to have as a .au direct. I'll give you a hypothetical example, there are lots of businesses that have a domain name with the keyword mowing in it. just a quick google and i can find
jimsmowing.com.au
andrewsmowing.com.au
twincitylawnmowing.com.au
foxmowing.com.au
and page after page of domains containing the keyword mowing.
But if we check the priority allocation for mowing.au, there has not been any application for priority. It seems likely that surely one of those mowing businesses would like their website to be www.mowing.au or email of info@mowing.au instead of their longer domain, and if not them then the next new mowing business might want that as their domain name.
It's hard to understate how much of a unique opportunity this is to scoop up some really short, even single word domain names that are about to become available to whoever gets them first.

The priority allocation of domains ends on the 20th of September 2022. After this date no more proirity hold applications will be accepted.

On the 3rd of October there will be hundreds of thousands of domains that have not had a successful priority application completed.  These will be made available on a first come first served basis.

You can check if there has been a priority application for a domain at
www.auda.org.au/tools/priority-status-tool

Let's take another example

farmhouse.au

Although the domains farmhouse.com.au and farmhouse.net.au have been registered, neither has applied for a priority registration of farmhouse.au.

That's fine, maybe they don't want it and they don't have to get it.

This means on the 3rd of October farmhouse.au, mowing.au and hundreds of thousand of other fantastic domains may be available to ANYONE who would like to register it for themselves...

I've just picked keywords off the top of my head to test:

Green text are ones that will be available on the 3rd of Oct, red ones are locked up by either a priority application or registered.

Assuming that the current registrants of the domains that have not applied status do nothing before the 20th of September, then those .au direct domains in green above and thousands more will become available on a first come first served basis on the 3rd of October.

I doubt there will be a great rush of people interested in the domain farmhouse.au but there are going to be thousands of domains that will be available like this and there are sure to be some amazing domains that would be great for a business website or email address.

You can read how the priority allocation process works here:

Do you want Jezweb to try and catch domains for you?

We've had some good outcomes from clients over the years in catching expiring domains to help them get a great new domain name for their business.

Step 1: Check each domain you would like on www.auda.org.au/tools/priority-status-tool

Step 2: Confirm the domains all have 'Not Applied' status

Step 3Fill in this form with the domains and bid amount.

Step 4: Jezweb will check the domains and invoice you for the bid total

Step 5: Make payment on the invoice.

Step 6: After the auction Jezweb will advise which were succesful.

Step 7: Any refunds owing will be paid given or applied against fees due.

Step 8: Domains will be changed to your ABN ready for your use,

The minimum we are going to accept for any bid will be $100 per domain.

We will be taking part in a silent auction to catch .au domains with the leading registrar drop.com.au and where possible creating a secondary application with another registrar.

If you want to figure it out yourself without our help you can go to drop.com.au, learn how the auctions work and see what they announce in September.

Example of costs

So if you say please bid for farmhouse.au at $200

Jezweb will verify the domain and invoice you immediately for $200.

If we do not win the auction

If we are unsuccessful in securing a domain we will refund 85% of the amount you paid and keep 15% to cover transaction fees and administration time.

If we do win the auction

If we are successful then Jezweb will invoice you for 50% of the bid value, in this example of a $200 bid that would mean you get an invoice for a further $100.

This covers the first year of the domain registration.

Once that invoice has been paid we will change the ownership of the domain to your preferred details and then you can choose what happens to the domain such as redirect to your existing website.

After the first year with the domain

If you would like to renew the domain annually with Jezweb the fee will be $30+gst or you can transfer the domain to a registrar of your choice.

What if the status shows Applied?

You can probably just forget about that one because the people that applied have priority and will work out between themselves who is going to have the .au domain. Here is an example for dawes.au

Applied domains are going to go to the priority applicants.

You can see in this example there has been a priority application by the holders of the .com.au and .net.au so one of them will probably go ahead and register dawes.au.
