Recent Website Launch

Hunter Pods is a leading provider of premium waffle pods for concrete slabs and construction accessories across Newcastle and the Hunter Valley.

We had a great selection of photos to work with, along with a drone video of a slab pour for the hero section on the homepage. Strong contrast and colours are carried from the branding through to the headings, graphics, and navigation elements.

Thank you Barry Streete

Barry (and Kane) with their family business Newcastle Fire Extinguisher Services www.newfire.com.au was one of the first few clients that gave me the opportunity to create a website and I’m really pleased to have been able to help ever since.

You can see the early version including an animation made in Flash on the internet archive: web.archive.org/web/20030330173825/http://www.newfire.com.au/

I know it might be hard to imagine for anyone under 30, but at that time, most businesses still had a fax machine that shared a line with a dial-up modem. They were starting to transition to ADSL1 (slow by today's standards) broadband, and the computer screen in an office was a 15-inch CRT with a resolution of 1024x768 pixels, about a quarter of the screen size that most desktop PCs have now. The typical office computer looked something like this, and you made a cup of coffee while it booted up each day!

Around 2007 the next version of newfire.com.au we built looked like this web.archive.org/web/20070829073440/http://www.newfire.com.au/

I’m still quite fond of the design tbh, the little fire extinguisher hover on the side bar menu, lots of details about each extinguisher type, a detailed quote request form, and many features you would still find on a website today. Then, in 2019, we refreshed the website to approximately how it is today!

Web design is different than it was 20 years ago, for example:

  • No more tables for layout:
We use flexible grids and styled elements now for structuring web pages.

  • Mobile responsive is required:
Designs have to work on phones, tablets, laptops and widescreen desktops.

  • Forget Flash, embrace HTML5:
Interactive elements are built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, not Flash.

  • JavaScript frameworks dominate:
React, Angular, Vue etc are popular for building dynamic websites.

  • Content Management Systems (CMSs) are everywhere:
Platforms like WordPress make building and managing websites far easier.

  • Visual editors are common:
Drag-and-drop interfaces simplify design and content creation.

  • Version control is normal:
GitHub and revision history help manage code changes and collaborate.

  • Cloud-based development tools:
Collaborative coding, testing, and deployment happen in the cloud.

  • Accessibility is a priority:
Designing for users with disabilities is usually standard practice.

  • Performance optimisation is important:
Fast loading websites, content delivery networks and code optimisation.

  • Design systems ensure consistency:
Design systems and frameworks maintain visual and functional consistency.

  • Cross-browser compatibility is less painful:
Browsers are more standardised now, simplifying cross-browser testing.

I’d really appreciate it if you could forward this email to a friend in business or someone you know who might like an occasional update about websites and AI tech!
